Biography of Shri Krishnadas Adhikari Ji

Birth :
Shri Krishnadas Ji was born in the year 1496 in Chilotra village of Gujarat province. He was of Shudra Varna. Later, by the grace of Mahaprabhu Shri Vallabhacharya, Shri Krishnadas Ji got the service of Shrinathji. He would compose poems and narrate them to Shrinathji.

Shri Krishnadas Ji coming to the shelter of Mahaprabhu Shri Vallabhacharya Ji:
Shri Krishnadas Ji decided to leave home and go on the journey to Braj Dham. In the pilgrimage, He reached Shri Govardhan via Mathura. There a new temple of Dev Daman was being built and a few days later, the form of Dev Daman had to be established there. At that time Shri Mahaprabhu Vallabhacharya Ji was doing Rajbhog Aarti. Seeing the form of Shri Govardhannathji, Shri Krishnadas Ji's mind is enchanted and absorbed in the form of Shri Govardhannathji. Simultaneously, Shri Govardhannathji also kept looking at Shri Krishnadasji. Then Shri Govardhannathji told Shri Mahaprabhuji that Shri Krishnadas, who is separated for a long time, has come. Then Shri Mahaprabhuji asked Shri Krishnadasji, "Come to me after taking a bath in the Yamuna." After that, He gave initiation to Shri Krishnadasji in front of Shri Govardhannathji. On the third day of the Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight) of Vaishakh (April-May), Shri Mahaprabhuji installed Shri Govardhannathji in the temple and appointed Bengalis nearby to serve Shri Govardhannathji and appointed Shri Krishnadasji as the Bhentiya (To visit different places of the world and collect gifts. Collector of offerings) of Shri Govardhannathji.

Rejecting gifts given by Meerabai:
Once Shri Krishnadas Ji had gone to Dwarka. There He was returning after having a darshan of Shri Ranchodji. While returning, He came to Mirabai's village and went to her house. Devotees like Harivanshvyas etc. had also come there. Some arrived 8 days ago, some 10 days ago, and some 15 days ago. But as soon as Shri Krishnadas came, He said that now I am going. Shri Meerabai insisted on staying for some days but Shri Krishnadas Ji did not stop. Then Shri Meerabai gave some  gold coins to Shrinathji as a gift, but Shri Krishnadas refused it saying that "You are not the servant of Shri Mahaprabhu Ji, so I cannot accept your present." Saying this, Shri Krishnadas Ji left. After coming to some distance, a Vaishnava asked Shri Krishnadas Ji why he didn't take gifts for Shrinathji. On this Shri Krishnadas Ji said, "What to say of offerings, so many servants were present there at Meerabai's house, I have rejected the offering by lowering their noses. Where would so many servants meet at one place? All these people would also think that if a Shudra servant of Mahaprabhu had come who rejected the offering, then how great would be my spiritual master."

Shrinathji's order to Shri Krishnadas Ji to bring Shyamkumar in the night:
Once Shrinathji ordered Shri Krishnadas Ji, "You should take Shyamkumar and come to Parasauli at night because Shyam Kumar plays the Mridang (tabor) very well."
After Shrinathji's Shayan aarti, Shri Krishnadas Ji came to Shyamkumar and said, "Shrinathji has ordered that you should come to Parasauli with the Mridang (tabor)."
Shyamkumar said, "Do Shrinathji remember me too and have ordered." Feeling overwhelmed, he came to Parasauli with the Mridang (tabor). Shyamkumar and Shri Krishnadas Ji saw in Parasauli that Shrinathji is sitting on the throne with Swamini (Radha). Then Shrinathji said to Shyamkumar "You play the Mridang (tabor)" and said to Krishnadas Ji "You sing kirtan."
Shri Krishnadas Ji started singing and Shyamkumar started playing the Mridang (tabor). Shrinathji and Shri Swaminiji started dancing. Shri Krishnadas Ji sang this verse -

(Raag Kedarau)
Shrivrishbhanunandani Naachat Giradhar Sang Laagdaat Urapatiraparaas Sang Raakhau.
Jhaptaal Milyau Raagkedarau Saptsuran Avaghar Taan Rang Raakhyau.
Payi Sukhsiddhi Bharatkaamvividhi Riddhi Abhinavadal Satsuhag Hulaas Rang Raakhyau.
Vanita Satjooth Sang Liye Nirkhat Kyon Saghaschand Balihari Krishnadas Sudhar Rang Raakhau.

Context of Surdas Ji's shadow in all the poems of Shri Krishnadas Ji:
Once Shri Surdas Ji told Shri Krishnadas Ji, "The shadow of my poems are there in the poems you create."
To this Shri Krishnadas Ji said, "Okay, now I will compose such a poem in which there will be no shadow of your poem." Saying this, Shri Krishnadas Ji came and sat in solitude and with a concentrated mind started composing the new poem. He composed 3 rhymes in the poem but the fourth rhyme was not being made. 2 hours passed but Shri Krishnadas Ji was not able to understand the fourth rhyme, so He thought that I should go and get the prasad and then I will come and complete the poem. Leaving the ink, pen, and the letter in which Shri Krishnadas Ji had written the poem, He went to take the prasad. When Shri Krishnadas Ji was eating prasad in the temple, Shrinathji went to that place and completed the poem with his lotus hands. Shri Krishnadas Ji had written only half the poem and by writing half the poem Shrinathji completed the poem and returned.
When Shri Krishnadas Ji came to his place after receiving prasad, He saw that the poem has been completed. He understood that Shrinathji Himself has completed the poem with his lotus hands. Seeing this Shri Krishnadas Ji was very pleased and thought that when Shri Surdas comes, I will narrate this poem to Him.
When Shri Surdas Ji came for the darshan of Shrinathji, Krishnadas Ji said, "Surdas Ji, I have created a new poem in which there is no shadow of your poems."
Shri Surdas Ji said, "Okay, sing that, then I will know what kind of poem you have composed."
Then Shri Krishnadas Ji sang the poem -

(Raag Gauri)
Aavat Vanen Kaanh Gopbaalak Sang Nenchukeekhur Renu Chhuratu Alakaavali.
Bhauhain Manmath Chaapvakr Lochanbaan Sees Sobhit Mattmayur Chandraavali.
Udit Uduraajasundar Siromani Vadan Nirakhi Phooli Naval Juvati Kumudaavali.

Now Composed By Shrinathji -

Peetkosay Paridhaanein Sundar Ang Charan Nupuravaady Geet Savdaavasi.
Hriday Krishnadas Girvaradharan Laal Ki Charananakh Chandrikaaharati Timiraavali.

Hearing this poem, Shri Surdas Ji did not say anything on the 3 rhymes but started thinking about the last 3 rhymes and said "Krishnadas, I have an issue with you but not with the Lord. I can recognize the poem of the Lord."
Shri Krishnadas Ji did not say anything about this, he remained silent.

The salvation of a prostitute by Shri Krishnadas Ji:
Once upon a time, Shri Krishnadas Ji went to Agra to get some material for Shrinathji's service. There He saw that a prostitute was dancing in the market. The prostitute's companions were singing and everyone was watching the spectacle. Shri Krishnadas Ji also stood in the spectacle. When the crowd subsided, she started dancing in front of Shri Krishnadas Ji. The prostitute was very beautiful and was dancing in the same way while singing very well. Shri Krishnadas Ji got pleased with that prostitute and started thinking that she is only worthy of Shrinathji. Shri Krishnadas Ji gave 10 gold coins to that prostitute there and said to come to the mansion with her companions in the night.
Shri Krishnadas Ji took all the material from the market and put it on the bullock carts. After this, in the night, the prostitute came there along with her companions. Now there was singing and dancing with the companions, on which Shri Krishnadas Ji was pleased and gave 100 rupees to that prostitute and said "Your singing and dancing is very good but my Boss will not be pleased with this song and dance of yours". So I will teach you a new song.
After this Shri Krishnadas Ji made a poem in Raga Purvi and taught that prostitute how to sing. Then Shri Krishnadas Ji took that prostitute along with her companions and came to Govardhan after two days. The next day Shri Krishnadas Ji got all the material kept in Shrinathji's storehouse and did not allow any Kirtaniya to enter the temple. Then brought that prostitute along with her companions to Shrinathji's temple. Shri Gusain Ji [son of Shri Mahaprabhu Ji] was present in the service of Shrinathji. She started dancing in the courtyard of the temple and started singing this poem taught by Shri Krishnadas Ji -

(Raag Poorvi)
Moman Giradhar Chhabipar Atakyau.
Lalit Tribhangi Angan Pari Chali Gayau Tahaaneenthatakyau.
Sajal Shyamghan Charanneelhvai Phirachit Anitnabh Takyau.
Krishnadas Kiyau Pran Nyauchhaavar Yah Tan Jagasir Patkyau.

While singing this poem, she was dancing, and as soon as she sang the last line "Krishnadas Kiyau Pran Nyauchhaavar Ye Tan Jagsir Patkyo", She left her body and entered Shrinathji's pastimes in Her divine form.
The companions of that prostitute became very sad that this was our livelihood, now what will we eat. Shri Krishnadas Ji pacified them all and sent them off by giving them 100 rupees. Shri Krishnadas Ji had sent that prostitute to the lotus feet of Shrinathji, so Shrinathji accepted that prostitute.

Shri Krishnadas Ji refused Shri Vitthalnath Ji to enter Shrinathji temple:
Shri Krishnadas Ji had great affection for Gangabai. This was not pleasing to Shri Gusain Ji. One day Shri Gusain Ji offered Bhog to Shrinathji and Gangabai saw that Amaniya Bhog (should not be touched and seen), so Shrinathji did not accept that Bhog. But no one could know this. Therefore, after taking the bhog, Shri Gusain Ji performed the aarti of Shrinathji, put him to sleep, and came down from the temple. Shri Gusain Ji took the prasad and went to take a rest and all the inner servants also got the prasad and started taking rest.
Then Shrinathji kicked a servant and woke him up and said, "I am hungry."
To this, the servant said, "O Lord, Shri Gusain Ji had offered the food to you, so why did you remain hungry."
Shrinathji said, "Gangabai had caught sight of that Rajbhog, so I did not eat Rajbhog."
Hearing this, the servant immediately came to Shri Gusain Ji and saw that he is sleeping then the servant started gently pressing his feet. Shri Gusain Ji woke up, seeing the servant, he said, "Why have you come here at this time."
The servant told everything that Shrinathji had said to him. On hearing this, Shri Gusain Ji came to the temple after taking a bath and asked the servant to cook the food immediately. The servant immediately made rice and vada and Shri Gusain Ji offered food to Shrinathji. After this Shri Gusain Ji said to the servant, "Rajbhog (afternoon food) had already been offered and now the material kept for Shayan bhog (dinner) has also been offered." After this, Gusain Ji performed the Shayan aarti of Shrinathji after taking out the bhog and came out of the temple after putting Shrinathji to sleep. Prasad was kept in a box, so Gusain Ji gave prasad to everyone and ate himself. Meanwhile, Shri Krishnadas Ji came and said to Gusain Ji sarcastically, "Your Majesty, if you are the one who does everything and you eat food without offering to the Lord, then this is good."
Shri Gusain Ji laughed at Shri Krishnadas Ji and said, "I need to suffer all this because of your actions." Hearing this, Shri Krishnadas Ji felt very bad and said to Shri Gusain Ji "Now you will not climb on Govardhan to the darshan of Shrinathji temple."
Hearing this, Shri Gusain Ji came to Parasauli and started thinking that who is Krishnadas to refuse me, it is all the will of Shrinathji. Shri Gusain Ji used to see the Lord from the window of Shrinathji from there. He used to live in Parasauli for 3 days and in Gokul for 3 days.
When Shri Krishnadas Ji came to know that Gusainji used to have darshan of Shrinathji from the window, he closed the window. Now Shri Gusain Ji used to send letters to Inner servant Ramdas for Shrinathji. Ramdas would use to offer that letter to Shrinathji. Shrinathji would read that letter and write the answer in it and Ramdas used to bring that letter to Shri Gusain Ji. Shri Gusain Ji used to read that letter after which he dissolves the letter in water and drink. Such dealings of letters continued for 6 months. Knowing Shri Krishnadas as the servant of Mahaprabhu, Shri Gusain Ji never said anything but remained distraught in the separation of Shrinathji.
One day King Birbal came to see Shrinathji. Shri Gusain Ji was sitting in Parasauli, so Birbal came to Giridhar Ji's house after seeing the Lord. Giridhar Ji told him that Shri Krishnadas Ji does not allow Gusain Ji to enter the temple. Hearing this, Birbal came to Mathura and asked 500 soldiers to bring Shri Krishnadas Ji captive. Soldiers brought Shri Krishnadas Ji captive. Birbal imprisoned Krishnadas Ji in a prison. Here Shri Giridhar Ji reached Gusain Ji and narrated all the events. Shri Gusain Ji started saying "Who did this? Shri Mahaprabhu Ji's servant has suffered so much, you must have complained to Birbal."
Shri Giridhar Ji said, "I had told everything when Birbal asked me about it."
Shri Gusain Ji said, "I will take food only when Krishnadas will come here."
Hearing this, Shri Giridhar Ji immediately reached Birbal and told him that Gusain Ji would not take food without Krishnadas. Hearing this, Birbal freed Krishnadas from bondage. Shri Giridhar Ji immediately left for Gokul with Shri Krishnadas Ji. When this information reached Gusain Ji, He came to Thakurani Ghat. Shri Krishnadas also came there with Giridhar Ji. Shri Krishnadas Ji took off from the horse and bowed down to Shri Gusain Ji and recited a poem -

(Raag Kedarau)
Shrivitthalju Ke Charan Ki Vali.
Hamase Patit Udharankaran Param Kripal Aayai Aapan Chali.
Ujjal Arun Daya Rangranjit Dashnakhchandraviharat Man Niradali.
Subhagkarasukhakar Shobhan Paavan Bhakti Mudit Lalitkar Anjali.
Atisemaraduli Sugandhasu Sheetal Paratatri Vidhitaap Daaratmal.
Bhajikrishnadas Vaar Ek Sudhikari Terau Kaha Karegau Ripukal.

After this, Shri Gusain Ji had food, Shri Krishnadas Ji took leftover food remnants of Gusain Ji. Shri Gusain Ji then came to Shrinathji temple with Krishnadas. At the time of Rajbhog, Gusain Ji came in front of Shrinathji. Shrinathji was very pleased to see Gusain Ji and asked him "Are you well", Gusain Ji said, "that the day I have darshan of You is the best day for me". After putting Shrinathji to sleep, Gusain Ji called Krishnadas Ji in front of Shrinathji and said that now you take all the care and service of this temple under your authority. Shri Krishnadas Ji asked Shri Gusain Ji for the forgiveness of his actions, on which Gusain Ji said that Shrinathji will forgive your actions.

Death of Shri Krishnadas Ji due to falling in the well after which he got Ghost body:
Once a Vaishnava came to Shri Krishnadas Ji and said, "Maharaj, I need to build a well. I have to go to my house due to some urgency, so I will give you money, please get it done."
That Vaishnav gave 300 rupees to Shri Krishnadas Ji and went to his village. Shri Krishnadas Ji buried 100 rupees of that money in a small pot under a mango tree and thought that when 200 rupees will be spent, then I will use this money. After this, seeing a proper time, Shri Krishnadas Ji started digging a well near Rudra Kund. After a few days, the well was ready, only some of the linings of wood above were left. Shri Krishnadas Ji went to see that well and somehow He slipped and fell in that well itself. 2 men descended into the well and started searching for Shri Krishnadas Ji but the body of Shri Krishnadas was not found. Then they all came to Gusain Ji and said that "Shri Krishnadas Ji fell into the well but his body was not found." Ramdas Ji sitting nearby said, "Adho Gachhantitamasaah" (he fell due to his offense).
On this Gusain Ji said to Ramdas not to say like this.
The reason for Shri Krishnadas Ji's falling into the well and His body was not found is because He was divine and attained the service of Shrinathji and from this body, Krishnadas Ji made offense into the lotus feet of Gusain Ji, so that body turned into a ghost body and sat on the Peepal tree in Poonchri, he is suffering his punishment. But no one came to know about this.

Gusain Shri Vitthalnath Ji freed Shri Krishnadas Ji from the ghost body:
Once a buffalo of Shrinathji was lost. Gopinath cowherd and 4-5 other cowherds went out to find that buffalo. When they all came to Poonchari looking for that buffalo, they saw that Shrinathji was playing there and Shri Krishnadasji was sitting on the peepal tree in the form of a ghost. Shri Krishnadas Ji told Gopinath cowherd
Hey brother, I have to make a request to Shri Gusain Ji and say that Krishnadas has said that I am your culprit, that's why I am suffering. I am always near Shrinathji but Shrinathji doesn't touch me and I am not getting freedom from this ghost body. Please ask Gusain Ji to forgive my offense, then I will be free from this ghost body. I have kept 100 rupees under a mango tree in the garden, take it out and get the upper work of that well done.
Gopinath came to Shri Gusain Ji and narrated everything about Krishnadas Ji. Then Shri Gusain Ji took out 100 rupees from under the mango tree and completed the work of the well due to which Krishnadas Ji got free from the ghost body.
Shrinathji used to give darshan to Shri Krishnadas Ji even in a ghost body, so the reason for this is that once Shri Gusain Ji called Krishnadas Ji in front of Shrinathji and said that you now take possession of the temple and serve Shrinathji. On this Krishnadas Ji had said that Maharaj, forgive my offense. And Gusain Ji had said that Shrinathji will forgive your offense. For this reason, Shrinathji forgave Shri Krishnadas's offense and used to give him darshan even in the ghost body also. But Shrinathji did not touch Krishnadas Ji and if he had touched then Shri Krishnadas Ji would have been freed from the ghost body. But the fact is that Krishnadas Ji's salvation was in the hands of Shri Gusain Ji.

Shri Krishnadas Ji in the ghost body had told Shrinathji that "Lord, you are giving me darshan and you are speaking to me, why don't you free me from this."
Shrinathji said, "I give you darshan and I speak to you is only for the words of Shri Gusain Ji [because I can't say no to Gusain Ji], otherwise I wouldn't have given you darshan in the ghost body and don't even speak. You have committed the offense of Shri Gusain Ji, hence your salvation is in the hands of Gusain Ji, when he will free you, then only you will be saved.

After many days of being in the ghost body, the most merciful Shri Gusain Ji felt pity for Shri Krishnadas Ji that Krishnadas was suffering for a long time.  Shri Gusain Ji went to Dhruvaghat and got Shradh karma done for Shri Krishnadas Ji and saved him. Then Shri Krishnadas Ji was freed from the ghost body and attained the divine pastimes of the Lord.
